What Is a Health and Wellness Coach?
Most people already know that exercising, eating nutritious foods, managing stress, and getting enough sleep are important. The difficult part is consistently putting that knowledge into action.
That is where a health and wellness coach can help.
A health and wellness coach works with you to create healthier habits that fit your goals, lifestyle, responsibilities, and current abilities. Instead of simply telling you what you “should” be doing, a coach helps you identify what is realistic, create a plan, and continue moving forward when life gets busy.
The goal is not to make you perfect. It is to help you become more consistent.
What Does a Health and Wellness Coach Do?
A health and wellness coach helps you recognize where you are now, decide where you want to go, and build a realistic path between the two.
Depending on your goals, health and wellness coaching may focus on areas such as:
Exercise and physical activity
Strength, mobility, and flexibility
Daily habits
Stress management
Confidence and mindset
Energy and daily routines
Goal setting
Time management
Accountability
Creating a healthier work-life balance
According to the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching, health and wellness coaches support clients in setting self-determined goals, taking action, and creating lasting changes that align with their values.
In simpler terms, a coach helps you close the gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it.
A Coach Does More Than Give You a Plan
A plan can be helpful, but a plan by itself is not always enough.
You may have followed a workout program, downloaded a nutrition app, or written down goals before. You might have started strong, stayed consistent for a few weeks, and then fallen out of your routine.
That does not necessarily mean you are lazy or unmotivated. It may mean the plan did not account for your schedule, energy, responsibilities, preferences, or obstacles.
A health and wellness coach looks beyond the plan. Together, you explore questions such as:
What usually causes you to lose momentum?
Which habits feel realistic right now?
What type of movement do you actually enjoy?
What is getting in the way of your progress?
How can you adjust the plan during a difficult week?
What kind of support helps you stay accountable?
This process helps you understand your own patterns instead of repeatedly starting over.
Health Coaching Is a Partnership
Health coaching should feel like a partnership—not a lecture.
A good coach listens, asks questions, helps you organize your thoughts, and supports you in making decisions that align with your goals. You still have ownership over the process because the changes need to work in your real life.
You do not need someone to control every choice you make. You need guidance that helps you make better choices more consistently.
Sometimes that means taking a bigger step. Other times, it means scaling the plan back and focusing on one manageable habit. Both can be progress.
Small steps may not always feel exciting, but they are often what create sustainable behavior change.
What Is the Difference Between a Health Coach and a Personal Trainer?
There can be some overlap, but the two roles are not exactly the same.
A personal trainer primarily focuses on physical fitness. This may include teaching exercises, creating workout programs, improving strength, and helping clients move safely and effectively.
A health and wellness coach looks at the bigger picture. Exercise may be part of the process, but coaching can also address habits, mindset, stress, sleep, routines, motivation, and accountability.
For example, a personal trainer may create your workout. A health and wellness coach may help you understand why you have difficulty following the workout, reorganize your week, choose a more realistic schedule, and develop strategies to remain consistent.
Because my background is in kinesiology and exercise science, I can bring physical activity, strength training, mobility, and overall wellness into the coaching process. However, the goal is not only to complete workouts. It is to help you create a healthier lifestyle that you can realistically maintain.
What a Health and Wellness Coach Does Not Do
It is equally important to understand the limits of health and wellness coaching.
A health and wellness coach does not replace a physician, registered dietitian, therapist, or other licensed healthcare professional. Coaches do not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medication, or provide treatment outside their professional qualifications.
The NBHWC scope of practice describes a coach as an accountability partner who supports self-directed behavior change. When needed, coaching can work alongside recommendations from your medical or healthcare team.
Think of it this way: a healthcare professional may diagnose or treat a condition, while a health and wellness coach can help you work on the everyday habits and actions that support your overall well-being.
Who Can Benefit From Health and Wellness Coaching?
Health and wellness coaching can be helpful if you:
Know what you should do but have trouble following through
Frequently start and stop healthy routines
Feel overwhelmed by conflicting health information
Want to become stronger and more active
Need accountability and consistent support
Have difficulty fitting wellness into a busy schedule
Want to improve your sleep, stress, energy, or daily habits
Are tired of extreme or short-term approaches
Want a personalized plan instead of a one-size-fits-all program
You do not need to wait until everything falls apart before working with a coach. Coaching can also help when you are doing fairly well but want more structure, clarity, or direction.
What Happens During a Health Coaching Session?
Every coach has a different approach, but a session will usually include a conversation about your goals, current progress, challenges, and next steps.
During a session, you may:
Review what happened since your previous session.
Recognize progress, even if it seems small.
Discuss challenges or unexpected obstacles.
Adjust habits or goals when needed.
Choose realistic action steps for the upcoming week.
Identify how you will stay accountable.
The purpose is not to judge you for what you did or did not complete. The purpose is to learn from what happened and use that information to make the next step more realistic.
Failure is information, not identity.
If a strategy did not work, we do not automatically assume that you failed. We look at why it did not work and decide what needs to change.
What Results Can You Expect?
The results of health and wellness coaching depend on your goals, participation, circumstances, and consistency. Coaching cannot guarantee a specific outcome, but it can provide the structure and support needed to make meaningful changes.
Over time, you may become better at:
Creating realistic goals
Following through on commitments
Responding to setbacks without giving up
Building routines around your actual schedule
Recognizing behaviors that help or hurt your progress
Making healthier decisions with more confidence
Staying active without treating fitness as punishment
The most valuable result may be learning how to continue without needing everything to go perfectly.
A missed workout does not need to become a missed month. A difficult week does not erase the progress you have already made.
Why Sustainable Habits Matter
Extreme changes can create fast momentum, but they are often difficult to maintain. If your routine only works when your schedule, motivation, and energy are perfect, it probably will not work for very long.
Sustainable habits are flexible enough to continue during normal life.
That might mean completing a 20-minute workout instead of skipping exercise because you cannot fit in an hour. It might mean focusing on two healthy meals instead of trying to change your entire diet overnight. It might also mean maintaining your current progress during a stressful period instead of constantly pushing for more.
Maintenance is not failure. Sometimes maintaining the healthier level you have reached is an important form of progress.
Boring progress wins because it is progress you can repeat.
How to Know Whether a Coach Is Right for You
Before choosing a health and wellness coach, consider asking:
What is your coaching approach?
What education, training, or experience do you have?
How do you personalize the coaching process?
How do you provide accountability?
What happens if I struggle or fall behind?
What is included in the program?
How often will we meet?
How do you measure progress?
What is outside your professional scope?
You should feel comfortable asking questions. A good coaching relationship should feel supportive, respectful, and collaborative.
You are not looking for someone who expects perfection. You are looking for someone who can meet you where you are while helping you continue moving forward.
Health and Wellness Coaching With Me - Coach Mike
My approach to health and wellness coaching focuses on your habits, body, and mindset.
We look at your goals, current routine, barriers, and the areas of your life that may be affecting your progress. From there, we create practical steps that fit into your week.
The goal is to help you get stronger, move better, improve your daily habits, and develop a healthier lifestyle without feeling like you need to change everything at once.
You will receive guidance and accountability, but you will also learn more about yourself. Over time, you can become better at recognizing what works, adjusting when necessary, and continuing even when motivation is not at its highest.
You do not need to become a completely different person. You are developing a stronger version of yourself—one realistic step at a time.
